Travel Hints for visiting Guatemala.
Guatemala is the northern most country in Central America. It is a
relatively small country covering 42,355 square miles that embraces a
richly diverse landscape – from steamy tropical rainforests and beaches
to majestic mountain ranges dotted with active and inactive volcanoes.
Guatemala shares its northern border with Mexico, Belize on the eastern
side and touching both Honduras and El Salvador to the south. The
Pacific Ocean and its black sand beaches stretch along the west coast
and to the east there is access to the Caribbean Sea.
The diversity of the landscape is amazing; incredible Mayan ruins to
Spanish Cathedrals.
But the real
reason we come to Guatemala is for the people. Over 55% of the population is
Maya Indian plus a large percentage from Spanish and European heritage. The Maya
have held onto their customs and proudly celebrate their traditions through
everyday dress, music and dance. The Spanish arrived in the early 1500’s to
impose and mingle their religious beliefs, architectural style and social
hierarchy.
Guatemala, as we know it today, is a result of this colorful cultural
mix and roller-coaster struggle over land and power.
Guatemalans are unique. The adventure that brings you here will change
you – we hope that the gentle and joyous spirit of the people will touch
your heart as you bring a little one into your life. The rich cultural
heritage your child brings to you is a gift of great pride.
It is our hope that Guatemala will become forever connected to your
heart.
